This is a rare black light paintings series created by JoAnne Bird of this size. JoAnne Bird has been inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame and her paintings are found in museums and private collections throughout the world. As a professional artist her paintings are created through a combination of controlled paint throwing and the use of a palette knife.
Sand Paintings
Navajo sand paintings have been used by medicine men for rituals and healing ceremonies. Pictorial sand paintings which reflect the Navajo environment and lifestyle are also made. Today, these pictorial sand paintings are made by slowly trickling sand through the hand onto epoxy covered particle boards. The sand used is made from naturally colored crushed stone and minerals from within the four sacred mountains the Navajos call home.
